Your Mac Home directory can be accessible within Windows XP or Vista. The dashes in the product key will be entered automatically, so you only need to type the alphanumeric characters. Confirm the password by entering it a second time.Although this field is listed as optional, we highly recommend creating secure passwords for all accounts. This will be the default administrator account for XP or Vista. Place a checkmark next to Use Easy Install. If you don't want to use this option, or you're installing an OS that doesn't support it, you can uncheck it. After making your selections, click the Continue button.įusion has a Windows Easy Install option that uses the information you supply when you create a virtual machine, along with a few pieces of additional data, to automate a Windows XP or Vista installation.īecause this guide assumes that you're installing Vista, we'll use the Windows Easy Install option. If you select this option, you will need to supply the pathname for the existing virtual disk. This option lets you use a virtual disk that you created earlier. This option is only necessary for MS-DOS, Windows 3.11, or other older operating systems. Fusion will split your hard drive into multiple sections that FAT and UDF drives can use each section will be no larger than 2 GB. ![]() This option is primarily used for FAT or UDF drive formats, which don't support large files. The tradeoff is that you're giving up space that could be used elsewhere until the virtual machine needs it. If you prefer, you can choose to create the full virtual disk now, for slightly better performance. This option starts with a small drive that can expand, as needed, up to the disk size you specified above. ![]() Fusion uses a dynamically expanding virtual drive. Place a checkmark next to any of the advanced disk options you would like to use.Click the Advanced Disk Options disclosure triangle. For Windows Vista, 20 GB is a good choice. Fusion will display a suggested size that's based on the OS you chose earlier. But it doesn't officially support Windows in any capacity-on Apple Silicon Macs, it supports macOS and Linux VMs.Specify your preferences for the virtual hard disk that Fusion will create for your virtual machine. In recent macOS versions, Apple has been building its own virtualization framework, and independent developers have used it to create lightweight, free virtualization software without the cost or complexity of Parallels or VMware. ![]() This is a bit more flexibility than Mac developers have-if a Mac app has any x86-only dependencies or plugins that needs to be run within the host process, the whole app needs to be started in x86 mode, even if the rest of the app is Apple Silicon-native. Windows includes its own Rosetta-like x86-to-Arm translation, and Windows 11 improved it by allowing it to run 64-bit x86 apps and by letting developers ship apps that use a mix of Arm and x86 code. Running the Arm version of Windows will let you run most non-3D Windows apps, regardless of whether they were written to run on Arm or x86 processors. VMware provides some basic documentation for testers hoping to kick the tires of this new build, but it's worth noting that Parallels can at least offer to download Windows for you automatically. VMware also includes a basic 2D graphics driver so that the Windows desktop can be rendered properly on high-resolution displays, plus a basic networking driver. To meet Windows 11's TPM requirement, the software creates an encrypted file that is used to store the same kinds of data that an actual TPM would store on a real PC. VMware's blog post details some of the changes they've made to support Windows 11, many of which parallel the work that Parallels has done. Parallels Desktop 17 will run the Arm version of Windows 11 inside a virtual machine, and yesterday VMware released a beta version of VMware Fusion 12 that can do the same thing. But the ability to run Windows and Windows apps, either directly on the hardware via Boot Camp or via a virtual machine, still isn't officially supported.īut makers of paid virtualization software have been working to close that gap. The transition from Intel to Apple Silicon Macs has gone smoothly for most software, thanks to the Rosetta 2 compatibility software and app developers who have quickly added Apple Silicon support to their software.
